Ryan is relatively new to CA – he’s been working as a Digital Presales Consultant in the Plano, TX office for around seven months.

What exactly does a Digital Presales Consultant do?

“I help large organizations resolve their day-to-day IT challenges by introducing them to software solutions and industry best practices.”

Always learning

A typical day for Ryan starts with morning coffee, returning emails and prepping for customer calls.

“Work is actually pretty fun for me. My days consist of customer demos, and surprisingly, learning. Continually learning while on the job is a huge upside for me. I’m always excited to learn more about my area of focus, as it allows me to offer additional insight and value to our customers.”

The best part of the job

Ryan say the best part of the job is interacting with customers.

“I love going onsite and interacting with our clients in their own environment. This personal interaction not only allows me to properly contextualize the needs of our clientele, but it also contributes to a more trusting and productive working relationship with our consumers.”

The workspace

Ryan enjoys the collaborative layout of the Plano office.

“Having an enclosed yet open work area is awesome. It accommodates for needed privacy should my schedule be demanding, while still allowing me to openly interact and socialize with my coworkers.”

However, he says his favorite part of the office is the people he works with.

“We’re a healthy mix of professional and silly, which makes the office environment equally fun and productive.”

We asked Ryan what he feels is the best CA benefit.

Unlike most corporations, CA is incredibly considerate of family dynamics, personal growth or hardship, and all else that comes with being ‘you.’ My manager has been a wonderful representative of all that makes CA a desirable place to call ‘work’.”

New year, new career?

If your New Year’s resolutions include finding a better job, you’re not alone. But are you ready for the hunt? Here are a few tips to get your 2018 job search off to the right start.

Update your resume

You may have heard it a thousand times, but it bears repeating: always have your resume updated and ready to go. Even if you aren’t in the market, that perfect job opportunity will often present itself when you’re least expecting it, especially as many companies ramp up hiring in January. As you’re scrambling to add your most recent experience to your resume, the company is probably already talking to other candidates who may be better prepared. If you want a competitive edge, you should be able to provide an up-to-date resume at a moment’s notice.

Send the signal

In case you missed it, LinkedIn now offers a button you can click to discreetly let recruiters know you’re interested in hearing about new opportunities. To access it, navigate to your LinkedIn profile, then scroll down to view your dashboard. Under “Career Interests,” click on the button to turn the feature on.

You’ll be directed to a screen where you can enter more information about the types of job opportunities that interest you.

Lock down your social profiles

More and more employers are checking out social media profiles of potential candidates before making decisions on interviewing or hiring. You may want to think twice about posting things like:

  • Risqué photos, memes or stories – While may it have been an epic wet t-shirt contest, chances are the pics aren’t going to impress a potential boss.
  • Polarizing political or social opinions – You are certainly entitled to them, but be aware that a recruiter may not share your views and find them off-putting.
  • Ads for your side hustle – There’s nothing wrong with selling cosmetics, kitchen gadgets or home goods in your spare time. However, if your entire newsfeed is devoted to it, a potential employer might wonder if your attention will be fully focused on their job.

If you want to continue doing you on social media despite the potential pitfalls, at least be sure to go into your privacy settings and make sure only your friends can see your Facebook feed and your tweets are set to private.

Meet Johnathan

Johnathan has been with CA for two years, working with the Digital Presales team in the Plano, TX office. He started as a Digital Presales Engineer supporting commercial business, and has recently moved to supporting Managed Service Providers in the CA Agile Operations business suite. Johnathan says he enjoys the diversity of the role.

“This role has several different requirements. I can spend one day doing a demonstration for a new potential MSP partner, and the next day I am assisting with a product install.”

What’s a typical day like?

An average day for Johnathan starts with a morning cup of coffee, calendar and email review and daily technical blog reading.

“The typical day varies and that’s what I love about the role. Always changing!”

The best part of the job

Johnathan says his favorite part of the job is the people he works with, both internally and externally.

“I have a really great group of teammates here in Plano along with my field counterparts. We have developed strong friendships, which as a result makes the workplace fun!”

The office

Johnathan thinks the best part of the Plano office is the fun and collaborative environment. He also likes that there is an open workspace.

“I’m not confined to a cube. I get to interact with my fellow colleagues. It’s always nice to be able to turn around and ask a question to a colleague and get an immediate response.”

Mobility

According to Johnathan, one of the biggest benefits to working at CA is the ability to move into different roles and positions.

“CA is very supportive in their employees exploring other avenues within CA.”

Why CA over other tech companies?

Many people who are new to the tech industry may not have heard of CA. We asked Johnathan why someone might want to consider us over some of the better-known technology companies.

“Everyone knows Facebook, Google, etc. The best thing about working for a lesser known B2B technology company is you get to help grow the company. You get to help increase brand awareness. As the company grows, you grow.”

Meet Nathan

Nathan Devoll, Digital Presales

Nathan has been with CA for three and a half years, working in the Plano, Texas office. He started fresh out of college in our Digital Presales Associate Program, which consisted of nine months of intense technical and soft skills training. Since then, he has moved up, first into a Consultant role supporting Service Virtualization, then into a Team Lead Role, running the Continuous Delivery Digital Presales team.

“As a team lead [I] help my team members achieve their personal goals and achieve success, and work with the sales team to strategically win business for CA.”

An average day

Nathan’s day typically includes a mix of customer discovery calls, internal calls and product demos. The first thing he does every day is check his email and calendar, then on to prepping for meetings or working on any projects that may be on deck.

Nathan says the best part of his job is helping people remove the barriers that stand in the way of their success.

“For customers, this is by helping them understand the best way to leverage tools and processes. For my team, this is removing barriers and teaching.”

The office

Nathan says the people are the best part of the Plano office.

“The digital sales and presales teams are like a big family here in Plano, and that helps to make it fun to go into work daily.”

He also likes that his workspace is close not only to the presales team, but also the sales team.

“When you are next to each other daily, there is an atmosphere of continual improvement that begins to develop. It is also very easy to walk over to someone and have a conversation face to face.”

While CA offers a wide array of benefits, Nathan says that his favorites are the “tiny things.”

“For instance, the company caters breakfast on Fridays and they provide fresh, movie-theater style popcorn once a week.”

“I would say that we are well known within the technology space, but the cool thing about being focused on strictly B2B is that I know that I help most of the companies that people use daily create and execute on their vision, which then allows them to continue innovating.

“The other cool thing is that here you get to experience a company’s digital transformation first-hand with things like project Tensor and the move from mainframe focus to a more distributed focus.”

CA Accelerator is the internal incubation program of CA Technologies. Part startup, part venture capital and part think tank, the Accelerator is one way CA Technologies encourages internal innovation and barrier breaking within our organization. The CA Accelerator is a unique opportunity to join a big company, but have the feel of working for a startup.

As part of our “Day in the Life” blog series, we’re checking in with some of the people who build and define our latest projects and asking them what it’s like to work on an Accelerator team.

Meet Kayla

Kayla is a Senior Product Marketing Manager for CA and Head of Growth for FreshTracks.io, a CA Accelerator project. She joined the company very recently, working for Freshtracks.io for just a couple of months now out of the company’s Boulder and Denver, CO offices.

“It has only been a few weeks, but I am really loving it here so far! The emphasis on work-life balance is fantastic, and I have a wonderful team.”

Prior to joining CA, Kayla spent most of her career at advertising agencies and brings a diverse background in almost every type of marketing.

We asked Kayla what attracted her to a role with a CA Accelerator.

“I love the startup feel with all the benefits CA has to offer. I get to do innovative, fast-paced work with amazing resources I wouldn’t have access to at a traditional startup. The Accelerator offers the best of both worlds.”

What does a Sr. Product Marketing Manager/Head of Growth do?

“My job is to help FreshTracks.io grow! I do this through marketing, branding and go-to-market strategy.”

A typical day for Kayla starts with an overhead standup where she and the founders review Agile boards and discuss how to move things forward for the day from a strategic perspective. She spends most of her morning in meetings, and the second half of her day creating or planning.

“My favorite part of my job is that strategic and creative thinking I get to put into our product, and our brand as a whole.”

Kayla also loves her location and workspace.

“I love working part of the week in downtown Denver, and part of the week in Boulder. Both locations have such fun office spaces and are close to great restaurants and breweries.”

“Working for an Accelerator is a blast. It is wonderful getting the best of both worlds. Be ready to work in a fast-paced and collaborative environment.”

Meet Skyler

Skyler started with CA Technologies in 2014 as a Presales Associate, working with prospects to identify challenges and pair those to CA solutions. He came to CA from one of our customers.

“The excitement of coming from the customer side, working with a product that I knew and appreciated as a valuable tool for my job, is something I now carry when sharing our tools and solutions with customers and prospects alike.”

Fast forward three years, and Skyler has now moved into the role of Sr. Presales Consultant. So, what exactly does a Sr. Presales Consultant do?

“I work with customers to identify and solve IT problems. Usually this means digging through log files, replicating problems that they’ve seen, or just educating them on how they can use the tools in a way that suits their workflows.”

“I’m excited to have the ability and connections to work one on one with our customers to help them strategically leverage their solutions more effectively, and ultimately achieve the results they are after.”

 Loving the workspace

Skyler works with the Digital Presales team in CA’s Plano, Texas office.

“Working in an office has been a great experience. Previously I worked from home, and having the ability to coordinate and work with coworkers directly has been great. Problems seem to get solved a lot more quickly when you have the ability to turn around and ask questions, bounce ideas around, or just relax and shoot some dart guns at a teammate who may be focusing too intently on something else.”

“The office space is great in terms of how it’s set up. There are cubes, but not so tall that it keeps you from seeing your neighbors, communicating directly, and not having to walk across the floor just to see if your sales guy is available.”

What’s an average day like?

A typical day for Skyler includes a number of conference calls, strategizing on the best way to accomplish customer goals, and the occasional ping pong match.

“The first thing I do in the morning is spend about an hour to an hour and a half catching up on companywide emails, or studying up for the calls of the day. So much of what the team does involves specialized conversations around unique technology and features, it’s great to have the quiet to sit, read and process how this information will be presented back to the customer in the conversations for the day.”

The best CA benefit?

Skyler says the best benefit available at CA is the attention managers give to their employees, especially in terms of being able to take time off when needed, whether it’s to be present for a family emergency or to recover from a stressful time in the office.

“Having that time available makes it possible to work in a way that works best for you. I enjoy working in sprints, which can be days, weeks, or months long depending on the season. During this time I prefer to work many early mornings and late evenings. Although this can be very productive over a short period, it eventually leads to feeling tired and in need of rest. This benefit allows me to take time when it’s available to rest and recharge, but still be able to work the way that I enjoy most.”

 Why CA?

CA is a hidden gem when it comes working in sales at a B2B tech company. What advice would Skyler give to someone considering a sales job at a lesser-known company?

“View it as an opportunity. An opportunity to bring what you bring to create impact on the culture. Here in Plano, the team built the culture that we have today, we participate in the planning of our events, we’ve researched and continue to build a modern workspace with new technologies, and finally, we take ownership of the work that we do and the outcomes we achieve.”

Will your new job be just right or a howling fright?

Starting a new job can be a scary proposition. Are you going to like it? Will it be everything the company promised? Are you jumping out of the frying pan into the fire?

The answer to allaying your anxiety lies in doing thorough research on the company you’re considering before you ever accept the offer. In addition to the qualifications for the job, you should also look for clues about things like the company’s mission, values and culture.

To help with your research, here is a list of some spooky signs that your new dream job may really be a nightmare.

 The headless company

You’ll undoubtedly find polished headshots of the company’s leadership on its website, but can you find any other employee stories? The people who are in the trenches every day can offer first-person perspectives you won’t get from slick website copy. Ideally, you’ll be able to find stories from people who work in the same position and/or department that you’re considering.

The social media ghost town

If you’re like most people, social media is the first place you’ll look for information on a company. If you find an abandoned Facebook page with no posts since way back in 2015, and an Instagram with exactly three photos, it’s a sign that the company isn’t social savvy and perhaps not very current in its thinking.

The case of the missing job description

While a bulleted list of required skills is helpful, it won’t give you a complete picture of your role. A good job description will give insight into such things as:

  • The company’s culture
  • The culture of your specific department
  • How this role contributes to the company as a whole
  • The kind of technology you’ll be working with
  • What kind of team you’ll be working with

The clues that don’t add up

At face value, most companies are going to project an awesome company culture, but sometimes candidates can receive misinformation either in their own search or directly from employees. Maybe a recruiter boasts a lively office environment with volunteer activities every quarter, but when you show up for your interview you only notice a couple of disgruntle employees in cubicles, and when you ask about the last volunteering event your interviewer participated in they raise a brow.

As mentioned, researching the company prior to interviewing is of the utmost importance, but if you get the chance to interview onsite, use the opportunity to play detective and see if everything you’ve heard about the company up to that point is seemingly accurate.

A Day in the Life of An Intern: Paige Smith

Wondering what it’s like to be an intern or associate at CA Technologies? We’ve asked a few of this year’s outstanding group to share their experiences and talk about #LifeAtCA as an intern/associate.

Meet Paige Smith, Global Communications Intern in our New York City office.

Paige interned with a small software company last summer, but gravitated toward CA this year because she wanted to work for a company “large enough to allow for many diverse experiences.”

“I gravitate to global companies because so much of business today occurs across borders. To align yourself with a company with teams across the world will give you a better opportunity to have a more realistic internship experience, as well as the opportunity to meet a diverse collection of coworkers.”

We asked Paige to describe her intern role.

“My duty is to support the Global Communications team in whatever capacity they need. Lucky for me, that could be anything, depending on the day. There are recurring duties such as compiling daily, weekly and biweekly newsletters, but I’ve also written pieces for CA’s Highlights blog, penned bylines for executives and compiled internally and externally distributed content like articles and videos.”

A typical day for Paige involves commuting to the city via train, where she likes to catch up on email before getting into the office.

“Much of my duties are media related, so often my first page opened in the morning is the Wall Street Journal or various tech outlets. There are weekly meetings with teams to catch up, where I take notes, then returning to finishing or editing an article.”

Paige usually grabs lunch with other interns at a deli near the office, then eats with them at a nice park that is close by. The afternoon is spent catching up with people on projects or upcoming deadlines. Then, almost every day after work, she goes for a run in Central Park, which is just five blocks from the office.

Paige says her favorite part of her internship is the pace at which she moves on a daily basis.

“Unlike my previous experiences and what my friends tell me of their experiences, I have not had a single time where I had nothing to complete. I’m a person who loves to be constantly moving, so this is perfect for me. I also love the diversity of tasks I’ve completed thus far.”

When asked about the best part of her workspace, she said she likes the collaborative capabilities it has.

“My cubicle mate, Sam, is also interning, but on the more technical side of things. Our conversations about everything from AI to current politics and how it relates to security have been fascinating.”

She also loves the overall vibe in her office.

“It’s not silent, and there is always something going on. Hearing people constantly working around you inspires your work which is something I really enjoy.”

Paige has also cultivated a great relationship with her manager.

“My manager has been an incredible mentor for me thus far. From encouraging me to reach out to team members to even having a conversation about my LinkedIn, he’s been very influential and encouraging.”

What one quality does Paige feel is important to being a successful intern at CA?

“It’s incredibly important to be proactive in all regards. It is daunting for an intern to knock on a door of someone he or she may not know, but it’s sometimes necessary for an opportunity to open up.”

Paige also has some advice for candidates coming to interview for an internship at CA.

“Preparation is vitally important. When working with a company who seeks to deliver cutting-edge technology, you, as the interviewee, should at least have a baseline knowledge of the products and solutions offered, as well as others in the marketplace.”

A Day in the Life of An Intern: Irene Weng

Irene Weng, Devops Intern, Santa Clara

Wondering what it’s like to be an intern or associate at CA Technologies? We’ve asked a few of this year’s outstanding group to share their experiences and talk about #LifeAtCA as an intern/associate.

Meet Irene Weng, DevOps intern in our Santa Clara, CA office.

This is Irene’s second internship – her first was last summer as a technical training intern at Lucasfilm. We asked what attracted her to an internship at CA this year.

“I wanted real-world industry experience in software engineering and development, and I thought that CA would be a great place to learn from seasoned engineers and developers. I was also interested in working with a team towards building an effective product.”

In her intern role with us, Irene has gained hands-on experience configuring a login provider to the front of CA’s APM application, and designed a logo and icons for the Unfit application.

A typical day for Irene involves biking in around 9 a.m., grabbing a coffee, checking emails and working hard until lunchtime, when she eats with her intern friends and sometimes a few full-timers. Her day also usually involves an afternoon break playing ping pong or pool with the other interns, then back to work until she leaves around 5:30.

Irene said her favorite part of her internship is the people she’s met and befriended in the office. “Everyone is very friendly and kind,” she said.

When asked about her favorite part of her workspace and office, she said:

“The entire 6th floor is an open space with a bright color scheme and cool furniture that gives more of a startup-y vibe.”

What advice would she give to a candidate coming to interview for an intern or associate position at CA?

“Don’t feel intimidated by the technical questions and logic puzzles, and make sure to clearly explain your thought process while solving each question. It’s okay if you have no idea how to approach a technical question either, just make sure you explain all your ideas. The interviewer will give you hints along the way too.”

CA’s mission is guided by its DNA, beliefs that all employees strive to live by. We asked Irene what her favorite DNA aspect was her favorite.

“The ‘creative’ aspect is my favorite, perhaps due to my background in fine arts; I’ve learned that creativity can manifest in totally different ways, which leads to more innovation, new ideas and alternate solutions to seemingly difficult problems.”

Many people who are new to the tech industry may not know CA Technologies. We asked Irene why an intern might want to consider a lesser-known B2B technology company as opposed to a better-known brand.

“I think the work you do at an internship heightened by the environment and culture that it’s set in makes or breaks the experience, rather than the prestige or popularity of the actual company. As such, students or newcomers to the tech field should really research different internships/positions/contracts and what each role can provide as an opportunity, and make sure to apply for something they’re genuinely passionate about.”

A Day in the Life of An Intern: Molly Pfaff

Molly Pfaff, Talent Acquisition Intern

Hi! My name is Molly Pfaff, and I am a Summer 2017 Talent Acquisition intern seated in Islandia, NY.  I am going to be a junior at the College of the Holy Cross, where I am a Pre-Business English major. This is my first internship experience, and I was attracted to CA when I interviewed here and was introduced to the culture of employees, and the common values shared across the company.

This summer I get to sit with the recruiting team, where I will be listening to and participating in what they do every day from requisition prepping to calling candidates and everything in between.

A “typical day” in my internship is very dynamic, which is my favorite part.  While I am usually interacting with members of the Talent Acquisition team, I have also been able to have a shadow day once a week with members of the people, compensation, benefits, and mobility departments as well as work on projects with the campus & diversity and marketing teams.  I usually like to include a run on the treadmill in the Fitness Center (or a trip to Chipotle) in my daily routine as well.

While every aspect of my internship experience so far has been nothing but valuable and enjoyable, my favorite part has been meeting and learning from such talented people who are always willing to answer questions and help out.  The DNA Mission is a model that CA uses to define the company and its traits are those that employees strive to live by, and is a significant part of the company. My favorite aspect of the DNA Mission is the ‘collaborative’ piece. I have found that all the different departments and teams I have been exposed to overlap with each other, and work together to innovate and produce rewarding results for the overall organization.

That being said, I think one quality that people need to be successful here is drive, as well as cohesiveness.  Throughout my time at CA I have come to realize that a common thread amongst the people who work here is that they are driven to establish contemporary and innovative ways to help the company succeed as a whole.

A piece of advice I would give to a candidate coming to interview at CA would be to be yourself and not be afraid to ask questions to whomever you are lucky enough to meet.  While CA is a huge company, many people don’t know much about it before they get involved. I would suggest doing your research beforehand, because you will be surprised and impressed with what you find.  Just because you’ve never heard of CA prior to your interview doesn’t mean that they don’t have great resources, big-name clients, successful departments, and enthusiastic employees. In my experience this summer I have encountered all those things and learned about far more than just the corporate world.
