All week CA Employees will take time out of their work day to participate in a variety of volunteer projects, including environmentally focused projects, assisting food banks, and supporting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) learning for under-served youth.

Meet J

Jeania “J” Burton has worked for CA for four years, working in our Boulder, CO office. Before that, she worked as a college-level academic and creative writing instructor at Colorado State University, where she earned her master’s degree in writing.

“I liked teaching, but I went into the master’s program with an eye toward being a working writer; so, when a friend of mine said they were hiring technical writers at his office, I jumped at the chance.”

J is a member of two or three development scrum teams at any given time, where she brings in the user’s experience, challenges and desires into what our products might do and how they might do them.

“Using the information that I gather from Project Managers, Product Owners, Architects, Developers, QA Engineers, and others about our products, I write how-to guides, and produce how-to videos that help our customers do what they need to do in order to take care of their customers.”

An average day

The first thing J typically does when she logs in for the day is read a passage from The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living, a book of stoic philosophy co-authored by Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman.

“I like starting the day with this book because the stoic philosophy jibes very well with the Agile methodology, where the only constant is change.”

Next, she checks documentation spaces for user comments and responds to them – even if it’s just to say that we’ll need to research their question or suggestion and get back to them. Then she checks her email and calendar and gets ready for whatever might come her way.

“No two days are alike and no day is predictable.”

J works on with a development team in Raleigh, North Carolina and with the Documentation team of other writers in Boulder, Colorado, so she attends daily stand-ups and Agile ceremonies with the other writers, and semi-regular WebEx synch ups with the team in Raleigh.

“In between regular meetings I’m often in one-on-one meetings with SMEs, working on text or video deliverables, and doing ad hoc work on initiatives in our information Engineering BU.”

J usually uses her lunch to read, research, or look at social media. She also looks for ways to be social in real life.

“Every quarter, our manager brings the writers together for a team lunch, and the development teams do semi-regular team-building stuff, too.”

She is also always on the lookout for opportunities to meet people outside of the office.

“Last spring, I entered a contest put on by the group Women at CA, the prize for which was the chance to go to the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Orlando, Florida. There, I got a chance to meet many of the CA people with whom I work remotely, and women from all over the world.”

The best part of the job

J says her favorite part of the job is being a working writer.

“When I was a kid, I day dreamed about being a writer and I am one. I might not be writing best-sellers as part of my ‘day job’ – like I dreamed of back then – but the informational writing and video work that I do on a daily basis does flex the critical thinking muscles that I use in the creative writing and videos I do in my time off.”

CA Benefits

J says that while the entire benefits package at CA is great, the most important thing to her has been the flexible time off and the support from her supervisors to take it.

“My manager and her managers always make me feel like I’m a human being first and an employee second, which is no small thing. My Dad passed away a year before I started at CA, and I really appreciated being able to take days here and there to help my mom in Utah sell the house to move.”

Many people who are new to the tech industry don’t know CA Technologies. We asked J what advice she would have for them about them about choosing to work for a lesser-known B2B technology company, rather than a better-known brand.

“At the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference in Orlando, Florida this past October, I worked the CA Technologies booth at the career exposition for a few hours. Talking to the recruits, I said that CA is one of the biggest technology companies that they maybe hadn’t heard about as a consumer because our clientele is mostly enterprise businesses.

“Because we are a big company, you get all that entails, such as great pay, benefits, corporate integrity, potential to move around and up through the company etc. But each site, even the HQ in Islandia, is small enough that you get to know and befriend your teammates like you would at a smaller company. It’s the best of both worlds.”

In his role at CA, Oliver helps internal and external customers get to the heart of their issues, and then enables a solution. As a leader in the Mainframe Presales organization, he and his team are at the center of sales opportunities that are not only are significant in value and scope, but are onramps for positioning CA as a go-forward partner. Internally, he has worked to nurture an impactful relationship with the Product organization – one that pay dividends for both sides.

Outside of CA, Oliver is an advisor and angel investor for minority startup companies, and serves on several boards including the Sam Walton College of Business Diversity and Inclusion Board, the Walton Colleges Deans Advisory Council, HackMy Future, Joyful Giver and the Community Empowerment Council (CEC) in his hometown of Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He is passionate about the mentorship of African American and other employees at CA, and creating a culture of inclusion, diversity and gender parity.

We asked Oliver a few questions on how he helps eliminate barriers, both at work and in the community. Here’s what he had to say.

How do you contribute to eliminating the barriers between ideas and outcomes for CA customers?
I believe most barriers are imagined and can be overcome with intellect and determination. Ideas are the beginning of all things and can come from anyone.

Why is it important that we all “bring what we bring” to contribute different and unique perspectives? 
Experiences birth vantage points. The mere fact that every person has a different life story filled with unique experiences is clearly a signal that we’re all different. Those differences are valuable, especially when it comes to solving problems and creating new solutions.

Tell me a bit about how you’re bringing it outside of work with your recent appointment to the advisory board for the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Arkansas. 
The University was a springboard for my career success, so I feel compelled to give back. Serving on the Office of Diversity and Inclusion Board allows me to assist in the design and execution of programs that positively impact the minority student population. A student’s success on campus is key to graduating, which is key to becoming a contributor to our economy and society, so we don’t stop with on campus success. We also help students gain meaningful experiences through mentorships, internships and the acquisition of softer skills that are important to gaining a job – and thriving in it.

What did you learn from this experience that adds to what you do at work every day?  
Working with other professionals to solve problems, design initiatives and sell those to the staff sharpen the skills that I deploy daily at CA. Both boards are made up of talented individuals from diverse backgrounds, which provides an amazing opportunity for personal growth.

Why is it important to you that you’re making a difference – both at home and at work? 
I feel the U.S. has vibrant and varied economic opportunities, yet still the level of poverty, blight, imprisonment and people who believe they don’t have a fair chance are trending the wrong direction. I’m aware of how fortunate I am, and I want to help others. I read See You at the Top by Zig Ziglar as a freshman at the University of Arkansas, and it greatly affected me. The premise is, if you help people get to where they want to go, you will, in turn, reach your own goals. Doing enriching work—for profit or not—breeds internal satisfaction that is difficult to match.

From sales to salsa, learn how Pedro is breaking barriers every day

Pedro came to CA 13 years ago with a sales background in the distribution industry, having worked with global firms such as Arrow Electronics and AT&T. He started working tele-leads at CA’s Customer Interaction Center (CIC) in Tampa, FL, before moving to the Channel Sales team and Digital Sales Partner account management.

Recently, the Florida Department of State recognized Pedro with a Florida Heritage Award – presented annually to citizens who have made long-standing contributions to Florida’s cultural heritage, and honor the state’s most influential tradition bearers for excellence, significance and authenticity.

For more 20 years, Pedro has served as a bandleader and the driving force behind the Tampa Bay Area’s salsa scene, delivering original arrangements, fresh energy and the best of Latin music repertoire. He was born in Santiago de Cuba, but fled with his family in the freedom flights from Havana to Miami.

Pedro Bullaudy, Digital Sales, Partner Account Manager

After settling in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Pedro developed an interest in music and began playing trumpet. He came of age as salsa began to coalesce among Puerto Rican and Cuban musicians in New York. He shared the stage with Latin music giants like Eddie Palmieri, Roberto Torres, Jose Fajardo and began performing with the progressive group, Cuba Song, with Edwin Bonilla who is known for his decades-long run with Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine.

Pedro’s group, Orquesta INFINIDAD, has performed twice at the Super Bowl, as well as at the Clearwater Jazz Festival, House of Blues, in a Netflix film and in many local festivals.

We asked Pedro a few questions about his job at CA and his music. Here’s what he had to say.

1. How do you contribute to eliminating the barriers between ideas and outcomes for our customers?
I take the time to work with our Partners and internal teams to understand the different perspectives, possibilities and human factors that are specific to a challenge. Based on that, I translate a vision into an approach, and present it in a way that produces desired actions through individuals and groups.

2. Why is it important that we all “bring what we bring” to contribute different and unique perspectives?
This brings to mind the story of blind men describing different parts of the same elephant. Each based their response on the section that was immediate to them, and each was different. By bringing and discussing different perspectives, we can come to more fully understand the bigger picture and how to more effectively approach solutions.

3. Tell me a bit about how you’re bringing it outside of work with your recent 2018 Florida Folk Heritage award.
I bring a vision of the level of excellence that we are trying to achieve, and understand that it takes work. This, coupled with realistically addressing the details with sincere communication, has helped me to consistently produce harmonious outcomes!

4. How does music help inspire you to do great work at CA?  
It is very satisfying and makes me happy – which makes for more positive work all-around. It also teaches that consistency requires discipline for a smooth outcome. Through improvisation, it demonstrates that anyone can make stuff up… but to make it right, it takes work.

5. Why is it important to you that you’re making a difference – both at home and at work? How are the two related?
They are both in their own way “family” and I always look bring my best to both. When I do that every day – I feel alive, happy and ready to face any challenge that comes my way.

A Day in the Life at CA: Kris MacKay, Customer Experience Manager

Meet Kris MacKay. Kris brings a unique technical sensibility to his role as a Customer Experience Manager that’s critical to his ability to not only solve customers’ problems, but truly understand what they’re going through. “I have BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering, plus several years of experience in software engineering, including development and QA,” Kris explains. “This makes me sympathetic to the needs of our customers since I’ve been on the other side of the table, trying to get an application to work or to fit my particular situation.”

In addition to his technical know-how, Kris also knows how to deal with people. He has been part of the CA Customer Success Team for two years, with more than ten years of customer facing roles prior to that helping people, in his words, “use hardware and software through training and customer support.”

For Kris, customer success isn’t just about fighting fires. “I like to help people solve problems, but also really enjoy when I can help someone discover something new,” Kris says.

Kris also loves seeing that learning and application process in action. When asked about a recent success story, Kris shared how one customer used CA to better serve their own customers. “It’s exciting to see how they’ve put the pieces of our API Management and Service Management solutions together to increase their development throughput and work with THEIR customers to better serve them,” he described.

To facilitate successes like these, Kris focuses on making sure that the right people are in the right place at the right time. “If someone has a pressing issue, that means ensuring Support has what they need and gathering information to assist,” Kris elaborates. “At other times, it’s viewing pieces of a customer’s work to introduce them to a product feature that they haven’t had time to explore or is new and could really benefit them.”

Kris believes that great support comes from a simple commitment: “It’s key to keep communication lines open.” He puts this in practice by practicing active listening. According to Kris, “It’s important to not only hear what’s being said, but to ask questions to find out what else is going on. Information is often uncovered when the client and I discuss the situation together – not when I just respond to a request.”

That same spirit of openness carries into Kris’s life outside of work as well. In his free time, he helps teach kids in grades 3-8 how to program. Kris also enjoys bike riding and dining out at the wide variety of restaurants in the Dallas area.

What exactly does a Digital Presales Consultant do?

“I help large organizations resolve their day-to-day IT challenges by introducing them to software solutions and industry best practices.”

Always learning

A typical day for Ryan starts with morning coffee, returning emails and prepping for customer calls.

“Work is actually pretty fun for me. My days consist of customer demos, and surprisingly, learning. Continually learning while on the job is a huge upside for me. I’m always excited to learn more about my area of focus, as it allows me to offer additional insight and value to our customers.”

The best part of the job

Ryan say the best part of the job is interacting with customers.

“I love going onsite and interacting with our clients in their own environment. This personal interaction not only allows me to properly contextualize the needs of our clientele, but it also contributes to a more trusting and productive working relationship with our consumers.”

The workspace

Ryan enjoys the collaborative layout of the Plano office.

“Having an enclosed yet open work area is awesome. It accommodates for needed privacy should my schedule be demanding, while still allowing me to openly interact and socialize with my coworkers.”

“We’re a healthy mix of professional and silly, which makes the office environment equally fun and productive.”

If your New Year’s resolutions include finding a better job, you’re not alone. But are you ready for the hunt? Here are a few tips to get your 2018 job search off to the right start.

Update your resume

You may have heard it a thousand times, but it bears repeating: always have your resume updated and ready to go. Even if you aren’t in the market, that perfect job opportunity will often present itself when you’re least expecting it, especially as many companies ramp up hiring in January. As you’re scrambling to add your most recent experience to your resume, the company is probably already talking to other candidates who may be better prepared. If you want a competitive edge, you should be able to provide an up-to-date resume at a moment’s notice.

Send the signal

In case you missed it, LinkedIn now offers a button you can click to discreetly let recruiters know you’re interested in hearing about new opportunities. To access it, navigate to your LinkedIn profile, then scroll down to view your dashboard. Under “Career Interests,” click on the button to turn the feature on.

You’ll be directed to a screen where you can enter more information about the types of job opportunities that interest you.

Lock down your social profiles

More and more employers are checking out social media profiles of potential candidates before making decisions on interviewing or hiring. You may want to think twice about posting things like:

  • Risqué photos, memes or stories – While may it have been an epic wet t-shirt contest, chances are the pics aren’t going to impress a potential boss.
  • Polarizing political or social opinions – You are certainly entitled to them, but be aware that a recruiter may not share your views and find them off-putting.
  • Ads for your side hustle – There’s nothing wrong with selling cosmetics, kitchen gadgets or home goods in your spare time. However, if your entire newsfeed is devoted to it, a potential employer might wonder if your attention will be fully focused on their job.

If you want to continue doing you on social media despite the potential pitfalls, at least be sure to go into your privacy settings and make sure only your friends can see your Facebook feed and your tweets are set to private.

Meet Johnathan

Johnathan has been with CA for two years, working with the Digital Presales team in the Plano, TX office. He started as a Digital Presales Engineer supporting commercial business, and has recently moved to supporting Managed Service Providers in the CA Agile Operations business suite. Johnathan says he enjoys the diversity of the role.

“This role has several different requirements. I can spend one day doing a demonstration for a new potential MSP partner, and the next day I am assisting with a product install.”

What’s a typical day like?

An average day for Johnathan starts with a morning cup of coffee, calendar and email review and daily technical blog reading.

“The typical day varies and that’s what I love about the role. Always changing!”

The best part of the job

Johnathan says his favorite part of the job is the people he works with, both internally and externally.

“I have a really great group of teammates here in Plano along with my field counterparts. We have developed strong friendships, which as a result makes the workplace fun!”

The office

Johnathan thinks the best part of the Plano office is the fun and collaborative environment. He also likes that there is an open workspace.

“I’m not confined to a cube. I get to interact with my fellow colleagues. It’s always nice to be able to turn around and ask a question to a colleague and get an immediate response.”

Mobility

According to Johnathan, one of the biggest benefits to working at CA is the ability to move into different roles and positions.

“CA is very supportive in their employees exploring other avenues within CA.”

Meet Nathan

Nathan Devoll, Digital Presales

Nathan has been with CA for three and a half years, working in the Plano, Texas office. He started fresh out of college in our Digital Presales Associate Program, which consisted of nine months of intense technical and soft skills training. Since then, he has moved up, first into a Consultant role supporting Service Virtualization, then into a Team Lead Role, running the Continuous Delivery Digital Presales team.

“As a team lead [I] help my team members achieve their personal goals and achieve success, and work with the sales team to strategically win business for CA.”

An average day

Nathan’s day typically includes a mix of customer discovery calls, internal calls and product demos. The first thing he does every day is check his email and calendar, then on to prepping for meetings or working on any projects that may be on deck.

Nathan says the best part of his job is helping people remove the barriers that stand in the way of their success.

“For customers, this is by helping them understand the best way to leverage tools and processes. For my team, this is removing barriers and teaching.”

The office

Nathan says the people are the best part of the Plano office.

“The digital sales and presales teams are like a big family here in Plano, and that helps to make it fun to go into work daily.”

He also likes that his workspace is close not only to the presales team, but also the sales team.

“When you are next to each other daily, there is an atmosphere of continual improvement that begins to develop. It is also very easy to walk over to someone and have a conversation face to face.”

“For instance, the company caters breakfast on Fridays and they provide fresh, movie-theater style popcorn once a week.”

“I would say that we are well known within the technology space, but the cool thing about being focused on strictly B2B is that I know that I help most of the companies that people use daily create and execute on their vision, which then allows them to continue innovating.

“The other cool thing is that here you get to experience a company’s digital transformation first-hand with things like project Tensor and the move from mainframe focus to a more distributed focus.”
