Women in Leadership at CA Technologies | Heena Raval

Eleanor Roosevelt, the First Lady of the United States of America, rightly said: “A woman is like a tea bag – you can’t tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water.” As part of our “Bring What You Bring – Women in Leadership” blog series, we’re celebrating the work of several of our women in leadership to find out what they bring to the organization. This month we cover a woman who is not only intelligent and smart herself but builds and drives intelligence into software products designed to make life easier. Meet Heena Raval, this month’s Woman in Leadership star. She leads the Data Sciences efforts for CA ITC.

Senior Director, Software Engineering at CA ITC, Heena works closely with global teams across CA to develop Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence solutions. Simply put, she builds intelligence into CA products and solutions so that the end user can do data-driven decision making, become more productive and efficient in their day job. In Heena’s words, “These end users play varied roles in large enterprises who are our customers going through their digital transformation journey. Through these intelligent products, we help optimize the outcomes that they care about.”

What do you bring to CA Technologies?

On being asked what she brings to CA, Heena said, “Best in class industry experience, customer empathy, thought leadership on digital transformation through a niche discipline of data sciences, and cutting-edge skills in the technology market today. I feel I bring an experience of developing entrepreneurial teams and creating a culture of high energy, innovation and outcomes.” She thus truly resonates with the CA ideology of “Bring What You Bring” uniqueness.

If you had one piece of advice to women considering, or in a leadership role – what would it be?

Women often forget how capable they are and what plethora of skills lies within them. Hence, we asked Heena to give a piece of advice to women considering a leadership role and her answer was truly inspiring. She quoted, “Don’t think about what if I fall? Think about what if I can fly? Why waste time trying to fit in when you are born to stand out. Harness your capability and intuition to lead and pave the path. Believe in yourself and the rest will follow. “

Who is your biggest female inspiration/role model that’s influenced you? In life/or specific to your career?

We require continual push and inspiration to move towards our goals and this comes from someone we look up to – a role model. Heena is a role model for many in the organization but we wanted to know as to her role model is.

“I don’t have any role models as such. I get inspired by actions of several people and take away nuggets from their experiences. For instance, Maya Angelou, poet, and author, her writing, life philosophy and spirituality is inspirational. Sushmita Sen, former Miss Universe, her decision of adopting a child at the age of 25, I wonder what kind of upbringing you need to have, to make such a big decision at such a young age? She has been a hands-on single mother for the last 18 years with 2 beautiful daughters. Serena Williams is another person I look up to. Particularly how she has dealt with criticism of her race, body type and temperament by continuing to have her game do all the talking. She has been inspiring and now how she stands up for pregnancy break and believes that it is not to be treated as an injury. My everyday inspiration comes from the tireless women I depend on, my nanny, my cook. Such potential, if only they had gotten the opportunity to exploit their potential, they would not be doing jobs but creating jobs for sure. My forever inner source of inspiration is my mother, her grit and ability to give is what I would like to learn from and live by.”

What are the most important DNA traits that will make you a successful woman in leadership at CA Technologies?

Our DNA defines us and our qualities help us excel in what we do. Being asked as to what are the most important DNA traits that will make you a successful woman in leadership at CA Technologies, she said “Self-Awareness and Resilience.”

Heena Raval is a true example of a woman of substance. Her combination of intellect and hard work has made her a woman worthy of leadership. CA takes pride and cherishes having Heena as an integral part of the organization.

Intern At CA: Udatta Bhattacharya

Roy T. Bennett, self-help writer and author of the famous ‘The Light in the Heart’ was quoted, “Dreams don’t work unless you take action. The surest way to make your dreams come true is to live them.”

This stands very true for one of CA’s interns, Udatta Bhattacharya. A final year student of The UPES, Dehradun, Udatta always dreamt of working for a company that was a leader in the mainframe development industry and his dream materialized when he got the opportunity to work for CA India.

How did you know about CA Technologies?
On asking him about how he came across CA Technologies, he said “I heard about CA for the first time during the first year at UPES from my Mainframe faculty, when I was intrigued about the Mainframe industry and the companies involved in it. CA caught my attention since it stood out among others when it came to Mainframe based product development. All along, I was determined to pursue Mainframe technologies and got an internship in IBM. During that internship, CA again came up as the major developer of most of the non-indigenous products at IBM. The name CA was held in high regards when Mainframe-based tools were discussed.”

How was the intern program selection process?
But, fulfilling dreams isn’t very easy and requires hard work and dedication and it is only then that one relishes the fruit of labor. Udatta says it was quiet challenging to get through the internship selection process of CA.“The process involved one round of aptitude and technical screenings, one round of technical interview and one round of managerial interview. This process resulted in my selection at CA as an intern in the mainframe business unit. The process was challenging. It made me think, push boundaries, and above all, it tested my mainframe knowledge and skills, which was a unique experience for me since I never had such an experience in other selection processes. It was in this process where my knowledge in my own specialization was evaluated.”

What exposure did you receive on your CA Internship?
Internships are meant to be an extensive learning experience which prepares you for the actual challenges in the fast-paced, dynamic, competitive and ever-growing industry and this is exactly what CA provided Udatta with.

He says, “The role assigned to me during my internship was that of a learner basically. There was a lot on my plate to learn, grasp and be familiarized with. I got introduced to a couple of programming languages namely Assembler and Metal C which are the two major languages used to build and develop the tools. After having a basic idea of the languages, I was assigned 3 projects to have a hands-on with certain DB2 tools such as RC/Merger, RC/Query, and RC/Extract.”

How did your assigned CA mentor benefit your internship experience?
The right learning requires a direction, which only a mentor can provide and every employee at CA is a unique source of information and knowledge. Udatta too was mentored by one of the best at CA and he feels extremely lucky to be a part of such a supportive and helpful team. This is what Udatta had to say about his mentoring experience:

“I was mentored by Lokesh Patel, who is a member of my team i.e. DB2 Rangers. He guided me through the entire process of building DB2 tools, especially the languages used. He helped me set up my development environment along with Sridhar Pratik in the same team. He also guided me whenever I got stuck or had difficulty understanding something. Overall, he introduced me to my work and in a way, helped me kickstart my professional life. Since I wasn’t familiar with these languages before joining CA, I needed some help, reference and guidance from people using the languages, and was fortunate enough to have a mentor who is an absolute expert in the field. I got a bit of both appreciation and encouragement from the Product Owner Srinivas Adupa, who’d set milestones for me to reach and guided me through to those. My work wasn’t perfect, hence he pointed out my flaws and let me improve upon them.”

What do you like most about CA Technologies?
Learning is just not limited to skills at CA. The company believes that in order to hone one’s skills and perform well, people require a conducive, lively and relaxed environment and that is only possible when people come together and feel like a single unit.

“The thing I liked the most about the company is the work culture. It is apparent from the satisfaction and enthusiasm the people have working around me. I became familiarized with the Scaled Agile Framework and was made a part of a team and as a result, as well as shared a strong professional bond with all its members. This provided a huge motivation to work collaboratively and never feel isolated from the entire process. They’ve guided me through all my difficulties, and the best part, made me feel comfortable working with them as soon as I joined the team.” says Udatta.

How was the success of your internship rewarded?
A dedicated and passionate student, a proficient mentor and a jubilant environment make the perfect potion for success. Post two months of persistent efforts and endeavor, Udatta finally was rewarded for his hard work with an offer to become a permanent and integral part of CA Technologies.

“I received a Letter of Intent for a permanent job at CA after two months of my internship, which was of course based on my performance at the company during my internship. I felt that this was the biggest appreciation or reward of what I had contributed so far and adding to that, the result of all my preparations during the college days to get this dream job. Initially, I had a bit of self-doubt about my performance as an intern as to whether I’d be able to live up to what was expected of me. Rather, the job offer came as a satisfactory answer to all such questions.”

What do you like most about the ITC?
People are frequently asked whether they like what they do and generally, the answer is a halfhearted yes. A knowledgeable person once said the best way to gauge this is to notice if you wake up in the morning looking forward to going to work. If yes, you and your company are set for success. CA takes pride in being that company. We asked Udatta as to what made him look forward to coming to the CA campus every day?

His response to this was “The best part about my office is the fact that it has every facility that you look for in a workplace. It has a perfect balance of everything required. Honestly, during these first few days, I tended to spend more hours at work and didn’t really feel like leaving the campus. The building has a positive vibe of welcoming you to spend a good portion of your day and be productive to the best of your abilities. To back that up, there are the facilities. Up until now, I’ve been regularly visiting the gym and the cafeteria. At times my team goes for a cricket match in the field and I enjoy a game of table tennis with my colleagues occasionally. These really contribute a major part to my physical and mental health.”

What advice would you offer to those who are currently looking for an internship?
Udatta has truly set an example for other students who aspire to work at CA as interns and employees. He is the first student from his college to have received an opportunity to work for CA technologies and post his experience at CA, more and more students from his college aspire to follow the path taken by him.

On being asked as to what would he advise to others on choosing a company to work for, he happily stated, “My only message to the aspirants would be to always stay positive because good companies like CA Technologies do exist. CA Technologies, unlike many other companies, values your specialized skills and provides the chance to build your careers upon them. I chose mainframe and CA gave me the perfect platform to kickstart my career on a high note. Further, I’d advise them not to take their specializations for granted or lose hope in it. Because in CA, these specialized skills are valued to a great extent and these may lead to you ending up with your dream job.”

CA is extremely happy to welcome Udatta to its vast family and wishes him success for his career ahead.

Press for progress: creating a CA where everyone can thrive

Thrive at CA

Thrive week at CA celebrates a diverse and inclusive workplace

March is a special month for us at CA Technologies as our people will celebrate Thrive week, which coincides with International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month in the US. Thrive is our internal initiative focused on driving an inclusive work environment that enables diverse perspectives, experience and thought — all of the factors that are key to driving innovation and business results for CA, our customers and our shareholders.

This year, the theme of International Women’s day, #PressForProgress, encourages us to push even harder toward greater inclusion, diversity and parity. I could not agree more. We must all work together to ensure equality for all – not only because it is the right thing to do, but because it drives better business outcomes. When we harness the power of everyone, we are more innovative, productive, and create better solutions –  and that is simply, good business.

The innovative approach we take at CA embraces experimenting with different practices, failing fast and quickly learning from missteps to help move the needle. As I reflect upon all we have accomplished at CA, I am proud of the progress we have made thus far – but certainly won’t rest on our successes. I believe there is a strong need to press forward and continue the momentum as we focus on removing bias overall to create a more inclusive and diverse CA.

It is no secret that the Tech Industry – and all industries – are working hard toward a more representative workforce. Our goal at CA is to focus on inclusion first – we not only want to see a change in our representation, but also feel the change in our environment. Leveraging an inclusive mindset, we take a multifaceted approach to removing bias interpersonally and system-wide by evaluating our programs, processes and benefits to ultimately achieve a more diverse workforce and make progress holistically. We want to enable a truly inclusive environment so that we can realize the benefits of a diverse workforce and drive business value. We’ve made some big changes to our processes and policies to ensure we create an environment where equality and parity are foundational, bias is removed from our system, and our pipelines are fortified with diversity.

  • Pay Equity: Effective January 1, 2017 CA became the first company to no longer request current or historical compensation information from internal and external candidates during the interview and hiring process. Offering competitive compensation packages based on knowledge, skills and abilities helps eliminate any previous existing pay parity issues that may have been rooted in bias.
  • Diverse Candidate Slates: In an effort to build a pipeline of diverse candidates, we ensure we have a diverse slate of qualified candidates for our open positions. Since instituting the program five years ago, we have increased the diversity of our applicant pool by 25%.
  • Diverse Interview Panels: In order to embrace diverse perspectives during the interview process, we ensure we have a diverse panel of interviewers for our open positions.
  • Leave of Absence: Effective January 1, 2017, CA’s paid Family Medical Leave (FML) time off increased from 6 weeks to 12 weeks for leaves that are otherwise unpaid (i.e. maternity, paternity, adoption, care for ill family member, leave to care for self if approved for family medical leave but not approved for short term disability [STD]).
    • For maternity leaves, the 12 weeks begin after the conclusion of the any disability leave meaning a typical is fully paid for 18 weeks.
  • Leave of Absence Phase-Back Program: CA provides a generous, fully paid phase-back-to-work program for employees returning from leaves to care for family members automatically for two weeks to ease the transition back to work.

We further solidified our commitment to inclusion through our participation at the 2018 Makers Conference, where CA was one of 40 board members to raise their voices and announce a powerful initiative to advance women in the workplace. #Raiseyourvoice

“CA pledges to conduct a policy and process audit across the company to evaluate for possible areas of bias and implement solutions to remove bias where it exists.” ~ Lauren Flaherty, Chief Marketing Officer & Executive Vice President, CA Technologies

I look forward to pressing even harder for progress in 2018 and beyond. Check out #LifeAtCA and #BringWhatYouBring on social media to join us on the journey, and meet some of our great people first-hand and see what they bring to CA each day.

A Day In The Life At CA: Associate Software Engineer

Ever wonder what it’s like to be an Associate Software Engineer at CA Technologies?

When searching for a role or starting your career in the tech industry, you’ll typically find bulleted information on a company’s job description, benefits and culture. We want to go a step beyond that and give you insight on these key facts from the perspective of a real CA employee. This Associate Software Engineer profile is part of our new careers blog series “A Day In The Life At CA”.

Meet Ksenia

Ksenia Ponomareva, Associate Software Engineer has a keen love for tennis. She likes to play it with her colleagues in the morning hours to keep herself fresh & focused.

Ksenia’s Career Story

Although Ksenia has only just recently celebrated her 1st year at CA Technologies this summer, she’s made real impact to the business at the Prague Technology Center. Ksenia has two university degrees in IT, but never planned to work as a programmer. She decided to give a try & is now very satisfied with her work!

The Life of an Associate Software Engineer

We asked Ksenia how she would describe her role as an Associate Software Engineer and why she loves it.

“My job is not just programming, I do a lot of different things, such as studying product, investigating the code and testing fixes, as well as have meetings and training’s. I am always learning new things, and CA provides you with the opportunity to improve your professional skills and I really enjoy this.”

A typical workday for Ksenia starts with organizing the top priority tasks for the day, before fetching the first mandatory cup of tea.

“Every day we have stand up meeting. There we discuss the things each of us are working on, our plans and current blockers. I find this very helpful as it gets me in sync with the rest of the team. We also have what’s called a parking lot. It is a voluntary continuation of up meetings, where people help each other solve their current problems and blockers.”

When we asked Ksenia what is the favourite part of her job, she told us how she loves to solve the programmes that directly impact the products and customers.

“Programming problems are challenging. I enjoy the satisfaction of completing a challenge. It is always a great feeling when you solve another puzzle that you know will help the product and the customer and you can go on to the next one. I constantly learn new things that come with new problem solving tasks and I like it very much.”

Life At CA

Ksenia is certainly a fan of the office and the area on the business park in Chodov. She likes the very neat individual working areas in the office and the overall setup is perfect for effective teamwork. She is also a fan of the break out areas, and the abundance of meeting rooms.

“We have very nice park around our office. In the summer we enjoy having lunch outside. The surrounding areas are very pleasant and I love to take a small trip to the the little pond where the ducks swim. In the office I like the kitchen very much, it’s a great space. I can have a coffee break with my colleagues in an unofficial setting and discuss what we are working on together. It’s also great for networking as I get to meet people from different projects and departments there.”

We’re extremely happy with the benefits we offer our Prague employees. In particular, Ksenia is a fan of the benefits we offer to meet the sporty needs of of our employees, which is one reasons she loves her #LifeAtCA.

“CA provides us with an opportunity to do sports (yoga and pilates) during work time, all costs covered by CA. It also provides us with language lessons, where I study English and Czech.”

Ksenia’s Career Advice

Ksenia would recommend a Software Engineer’s position at CA Technologies to anyone who wants to be part of large global software company with great career opportunities and company culture.

“Working at a company like CA can be very rewarding & stimulating. CA provided me the opportunity without any previous working experience in Mainframe, proving that the company willing to invest to their employees. All newcomers take part in the two-month intensive training program (Associate Engineering Program). Employees can benefit from a designated mentorship that will help to build a solid technical foundation.”

We couldn’t have said it better. Thanks to Ksenia for sharing her Day in the #LifeAtCA of an Associate Software Engineer! You can follow her adventures on LinkedIn here

A Day In The Life At CA: Digital Sales Account Owner

Life at CA Digital Sales Account Owner

Ever wonder what it’s like to be a Digital Sales Account Owner at CA Technologies?

When searching for a role or starting your career in the tech industry, you’ll typically find bulleted information on a company’s job description, benefits and culture. We want to go a step beyond that and give you insight on these key facts from the perspective of a real CA employee. This Digital Sales Account Owner profile is part of our new careers blog series “A Day In The Life At CA”.

Meet David

Digital Sales Account Owner David Hardy is what we like to call a “boomerang”. After working with CA for five years, David left to join another company. However, David says he jumped at the opportunity to return in a business development role, supporting our Global Service Providers, “which I was very excited about, regretted leaving frankly”.

Life At CA - Business Development
David Hardy shows off his creative side with hobbies that include photography, digital and video!

David shared with us that his decision to return to CA is often justified through his experiences.

“CA management and co-workers are there when you go through a family crisis, be it a family member, health issue, or otherwise.  I had the occasion to experience this first hand and it really cemented my conviction that CA is the best company to work for (even with our areas to improve, which we are always working at).”

David’s Career Story

In 2003, David joined CA Technologies in his first role as a member of the Brightstor storage products team. In his new role, which began in 2011, David provides support for CA global service provider partners. This was initially IBM Global Services for four years, and David is now a part of the HP Enterprises Services team.

These roles make a huge impact on our global offerings. “I develop sales opportunities to partner with our service provider partners on CA solutions that are a white space for them. These partnerships help to complement their offerings, grow revenue while growing CA’s market presence.”

David’s #LifeAtCA

So why does David love his job?

“Working with awesome people and meeting new contacts over the phone. Helping to bring people, client requirements and solutions together! Every day is a different adventure!”

David is also a pretty big fan of CA’s new Tampa, FL office, where he is based. “Our new office has the most awesome view – the best of any company that I’ve worked for in my career! It also has a great layout and location (even with the traffic)!”

Life At CA Business Development Tampa View
View of Tampa, FL from our offices.

The Life of a Digital Sales Account Owner

A typical workday for David includes working from home one day a week (gotta love that flexibility!). He enjoys starting his day with a review of updates from his team and the company, through our internal social collaboration sites and emails, and greeting his local co-workers with fresh coffee in hand. This sets him up for success to dive into collaboration with the sales team and research to help his global service provider account discussions more effective.

“Lunch is often had in our kitchen room with a view, then enjoying a walk through downtown Tampa or along the Tampa Riverwalk.”

Tampa Riverwalk
The beautiful Tampa Riverwalk is just steps from David’s CA offices.

In the afternoon, David serves our customers and partners with discovery meetings, demos, and various other partnership activities.

“Training is also a part of many days, ‘sharpening the saw’ on product knowledge and skills to improve.”

David’s Career Advice

We asked David what you should know if you’re considering a career with CA Technologies.

“CA is a 30 year old company, which is not really new. Today though, CA has the startup attitude, with exciting new products, organically grown software and connected in to the application economy.”

We couldn’t have said it better. Thanks to David for sharing his Day in the #LifeAtCA in Business Development!

A Day In The Life At CA: Software Engineer

Ever wonder what it’s like to be a Software Engineer at CA Technologies?

When searching for a role or starting your career in the tech industry, you’ll typically find bulleted information on a company’s job description, benefits and culture. We want to go a step beyond that and give you key insights from the perspective of a real CA employee.

Meet Adam

Adam McKeown is a Software Engineer in our Vancouver, BC office.

Adam’s Story

Adam got into his technical career relatively late in the game. He started going to BCIT, a local technical college, at age 30. The contacts he made there opened the doors for networking opportunities, which led him to CA Technologies.

At work he spends most of his time looking through other developers’ code to find areas that need improvement or don’t line up with standards.

“I really like that the work that I do feeds into something larger and that I can stand behind it. As a QA Analyst, I sort of have the final say in what goes out the door, and if I’m not satisfied that it’s what the client needs it gets reworked.”

Adam says he gets excited coming to work because he knows he’s going to learn something new every single day. He’s already encountered three to four new languages in the 10 months that he’s worked here.

When asked about the most challenging aspect of working for CA, Adam said it is the speed at which things move.

“We’re a big company, but at the same time we react very quickly to changes in the market place and to our clients’ needs. We use the Agile methodology, which means we’re on sprints and PIs, and every PI our product owner is coming to us and saying this is what the client wants, this is what the business needs and it’s up to us as a team to decide how we’re going to meet those challenges.”

Life at CA

One of Adam’s favorite parts of CA is the trust and respect he’s found here.

“At CA Technologies, we’re respected. There’s a lot of trust placed in us to do what we say we’re going to do, and we reward that trust by working hard and meeting all of the challenges that are set to us.”

He also enjoys the collaborative atmosphere and the diversity at CA.

“We spent a lot of time collaborating here at CA Technologies. We’ve got a lot of smart people from a variety of backgrounds, and it’s great because we have all of those different viewpoints and experiences and educations blending into one another.”

Adam’s Career Advice

According to Adam, the number one thing you need to be successful at CA Technologies is confidence.

“You have to have confidence in yourself and in what you know, because you’re going to have to apply it every single day. Sometimes you’re going to disagree with your co-workers and that’s totally natural. We want you to bring that passion, because we want you to teach us things that we don’t know.”

Thanks to Adam for sharing his Day in the #LifeAtCA of a Software Engineer! You can connect with him on LinkedIn here.

Her role has evolved to help support the Global Leadership Development Program (LDP) as the lead for instructional design and content development, provide support for LDP alumni along their continued leadership journey and is one of the global facilitators. She also provides a consultant role on measuring the impact and value Talent Development provides throughout the organization.

“I have been at CA for a little over three years. While I was not actively looking for a new path along my career journey, I knew I needed to be. I thought about the type of role, and the type of company that would be ideal for me one year before joining CA, but didn’t know how or when I would find that ‘perfect’ fit. Then CA reached out to me and it was all meant to be.”

The Life of a Principal, HR Talent Development

We asked Jenn how she would describe her role.

“I am part of the team that aligns our internal leadership development program with current industry trends, the business environment and the internal opportunities for leadership development within CA; both for the capabilities to be successful today, as well as into the future. We want to ensure LDP is providing the type of experience and the support our employees need to expand and grow their leadership capabilities.

A typical workday for Jenn includes a mix of working with others on content alignment and execution of the leadership development program and LDP Alumni community, as well working individually in designing content and activities.

We asked Jenn about the best part of her workspace, and she said that she loves being together with her co-workers and teammates.

“The brainstorming and collaboration that takes place on a daily basis, along with lots of fun and laughter, makes it a wonderful place to be in every day. The Islandia office, and this campus in general, is absolutely beautiful and designed with the employee in mind. Between the wonderful cafeteria, the workout facilities, the Montessori school, and the grounds; they all make me very proud to point out to anyone and everyone that this is where I work.”

When we asked Jenn what her favorite part of the job is, she told that she loves seeing the impact of the Leadership Development Program, or any of CA’s talent development programs, have on those participating.

“My passion has always been in finding the gap between actual and desired performance, determining which will be needed to effectively reduce or eliminate that gap, and then seeing that all play out successfully.”

Life At CA

Jenn has especially enjoyed the work/life blend she’s found at CA.

“The focus on work/life blend has, for me, been the best CA benefit. This is something I did not have in companies I have worked for in the past. I have the ability to put my family first when they need to be, and that makes it so easy to put CA first when it needs to be.

What would you say to someone considering working at CA Technologies?

“I will admit I did not really understand what our company did until I started researching it. I would say that just because CA may not be a household name to you, doesn’t mean it isn’t doing absolutely amazing things. It is such an exciting time to be a part of CA; every single employee is a leader here because every individual brings their unique perspective to the table. In a company that focuses on innovation, you want to be where your opinion will not only be heard, but it will be counted.”

Celebrate International Women’s Day by Empowering Women In Tech

International Women's Day CA Technologies

International Women’s Day 2017 asks us to be bold for change, and CA Technologies is up for the challenge.

As the team and I plan various events, social media engagement and recognition to celebrate International Women’s Day, I am compelled to reflect on some highlights related to the diversity and inclusion journey at CA. We’ve been recognized for leading the way in changing the face of STEM through awards like Working Mother 2016 Best Companies for Multicultural Women, we’ve been applauded for our external campaigns aimed at empowering women in tech, and our women responded more favorably than men on 80 percent of our key drivers of engagement in our employee survey. However, our work is not done, and I thought this would be a perfect time to share some of our newest and most innovative efforts launching in 2017.

International Women's Day Pay Equity

Solving Pay Equity

At CA, we strive to be on the leading edge of change when it comes to eliminating bias from the workforce and to be thought leaders in the technology industry. Pay equity is and always has been important to CA because we believe all people should be compensated based on what they bring to the position and the company. Continuing this focus and commitment, we now prohibit discussion of previous compensation during the application and hiring process.

This simple and important shift will allow us to focus on the areas that matter in determining a compensation package. Offering compensation packages that are competitive and based on knowledge, skills and abilities helps to eliminate any previous existing pay parity issues that may have been rooted in bias. The intent is to create a more level playing field and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to earn fair compensation for comparable work and advances an inclusive environment where our people can thrive.

While at CA we have gender parity as it relates to compensation, we want to be vigilant and continue to make forward progress on removing possible areas of bias and advance our inclusive environment. Basing job offers on previous compensation can perpetuate gender wage inequalities. The gender wage gap has not significantly improved since Congress passed the Equal Pay Act in 1963. Women in the U.S. earn 79% of their male counterparts, on average, for the same jobs.

CA is proud of our historical focus on equality and pay parity. We constantly seek opportunities to continue forward momentum and we are particularly proud of our most recent proactive step. There are some proposed changes to pay equity legislation that focus on closing the gender wage gap in the United States, the earliest of which is not scheduled to take effect in Massachusetts until July 2018. We hope other tech employers will follow our lead and similarly implement this practice across their workforces to ensure all employees are fairly paid.

International Women's Day Diverse Slates

Diverse Interview Slates

We are committed to ensuring we cast a wide net as we source for our open positions through diverse candidate slate and interview practices. By focusing on reducing bias in the process and managing against individual unconscious bias, the diverse candidate slate requires at least two candidates in every pool of candidate qualifies as diverse. Similarly, diverse interview panels ensure that we have diverse representation among the interviewers.

It may sound like a small effort, but we know these programs work and we’ve been recognized for our results. For instance, of our senior-management hires in 2016, 13% were multicultural women, which was 44% higher than the industry average of 9%. Additionally, in the last two years, we have increased the representation of women in technical roles by 14%. It’s a good start, and we are enthusiastic about building on this momentum to increase our overall diverse representation.

International Women's Day Referral Bonus

Increased Referral Bonuses for Diversity Candidates

To help us build a diverse candidate pipeline, we are looking to those who know CA best – our people. Employee referrals are a great source for CA and those who are referred to the company, tend to be successful. While we do pay competitive incentives for referring any candidate that ultimately is hired, we have recently announced a double referral incentive for those candidates who are women, veterans, minorities, and/or have a disability.

These are just a few of the ideas we’ve implemented in our recruiting practices, and that doesn’t cover all of the daily pieces of Life At CA we offer in continuing support of the women on our teams. Take a look at these blogs from women at CA about our unique benefits and policies:

A Day In The Life At CA: Associate Services Consultant

Ever wonder what it’s like to be an Associate Services Consultant at CA Technologies?

When searching for a role or starting your career in the tech industry, you’ll typically find bulleted information on a company’s job description, benefits and culture. We want to go a step beyond that and give you insight on these key facts from the perspective of a real CA employee. This Associate Services Consultant profile is part of our new careers blog series “A Day In The Life At CA”.

Meet David

David Pokorny, Associate Services Consultant, is very active when it comes to doing outdoor sports and activities. Here he is parachuting, as well as a snap from one of his many enjoyable mountain bike rides.

David Pokorny - Associate Services Consultant

David’s Career Story

Although David has only just celebrated his 1st CA Technologies work anniversary, he’s made real impact to the business at the Prague Technology Center.

“I started working for CA Technologies 12 months ago. For 10 months I’ve been working on a project for a big UK customer, taking care of their security solutions.”

The Life of an Associate Services Consultant

We asked David how he would describe his role as an Associate Services Consultant and why he loves it.

“My role is to help customers get the best out of their CA products, in order to both support and drive their business. As a Services Consultant, it’s vital I have great understanding of both – CA software and our customers, the people who are working with it.”

A typical workday for David starts very proactively, summarizing tasks he has for the upcoming day, saying “hello” and sharing a French Press Coffee with his team members.

“Usually we have daily stand-ups with our customer in the morning, where we are talking about finished and upcoming activities. Then I start working on agreed tasks. When I need assistance, I utilise my amazing team mates who are keen to help me. When it comes to lunchtime, we have many nice places to eat around the office where we can go. After eating lunch, I enjoy spending time on the table football in the office with team mates. It’s fun and gives the brain a break.”

When we asked David what is the favourite part of his job, he told us how he loves to see the impact the products are having on our customers.

“I like customizing our products to fit customer needs. What I really enjoy is the time when we get to actually present it to customers and show them the impact. The biggest motivation I get from what I do is the fact that customers are seeing success and adding value to their business through using what I have delivered.”

Life At CA

David is certainly a fan of the office and the area on the business park in Chodov, in which he describes it as an “oasis for business people”. He enjoys the natural environment surrounding the offices with ponds, and various animals like ducks and rabbits hoping on the green grass. David is also a fan of the surrounding activities available including volleyball and giant chess.

“The Prague Technology Center is more than just usual open office space. I enjoy the extra comfort we have: large desks; powerful equipment and laptop that’s necessary for me to do my job; comfortable chair and seating; plus, various beverages available in a kitchenette including free soft drinks, tea, coffee, fruit juices and water.”

david-office

As you couldn’t tell from David’s introduction, he’s a lover of sport. We’re extremely happy the benefits we offer to our Prague employees meet those sporty needs and it is a vital part of why David loves his #LifeAtCA.

“CA has many benefits I like, but my favourite is most definitely the vouchers for sport activities and the access I have on the Business Park to do sport. Doing the job I do, means I’m sat for the majority of my day at my desk which is not very healthy. Doing sport after work is essential for good health and I am glad we have many sport benefits here at CA.”

David’s Career Advice

David would recommend a Services position at CA Technologies to anyone who wants to be part of large projects, with the potential to positively impact millions of people.

“Put simply, people globally are using technology that is reliant upon CA products and they don’t even realise it. CA is running core systems for huge companies, so you can expect to be working in large challenging environments. To put things into perspective, the project I’m currently part of has almost 100 million of our customers using our systems, which most definitely keeps me motivated to do my best at what I do.”

We couldn’t have said it better. Thanks to David for sharing his Day in the #LifeAtCA of an Associate Services Consultant! You can follow his adventures on Twitter (@david_pokorny) and LinkedIn here.
